Lego Block image to represent CAMHS Governance

The Department of Health describes Clinical Governance as ‘The system through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which clinical excellence will flourish.’

Clinical governance encompasses quality assurance, quality improvement and risk and incident management.

Accountability

Across Black Country CAMHS, we evidence our accountability through:

  • Attendance and discussion at Clinical Governance Meetings (Monthly).
  • Attendance and discussion at Clinical Effectiveness Groups (Monthly).
  • Attendance and discussion at Patient Risk and Safety Meetings (Monthly).
  • Assurance Reports where there is provocation to consider whether our actions and/or processes achieve what they should. These reports detail the review of an event of occurrence.
  • Working to local Black Country Healthcare Policies and Procedures.
  • Adhering to NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) Standards and Guidelines.
  • Working to NHS Models of Care (such as Thrive).
  • Adhering to National Data and Information Guidance.
  • Listening to, and acting on Patient Satisfaction and Patient Feedback.
  • Reporting on agreed KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Monitoring and acting on the performance of our teams across our Black Country CAMHS services.
  • Adhering to our Risk and Safety protocols.
  • Competent practitioners e.g. Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, therapeutic qualifications of psychological practitioners.
  • All CAMHS staff with direct patient contact hold up to date DBS certificates.

Clinical Models

The Thrive Model is used across Health and Education systems. It outlines an approach to care, recognising that children’s needs are met in all of their relationships, and not only with specialist services e.g. CAMHS. The model supports that working to support children to remain in ‘thriving’ is, as important as working to help children return to ‘thriving’.
