Voice

My child’s voice sounds croaky or hoarse, or my child’s voice is painful, or my child has lost their voice

This might sound like…

  • a croaky voice
  • a voice that cracks or breaks
  • a lost voice (no voice)

Even when your child does not have a cough or cold.

How can I help?

Top tips

  • Make a voice diary for 2-3 weeks. Write about times and situations when your child’s voice is better and worse (e.g. “when my child shouts at football, no voice comes out”, “when my child sings, his voice breaks and cracks” etc.)
  • Keep your child hydrated. Encourage them to take regular sips of water throughout the day.
  • If you are worried about your child’s voice and it is not getting better, talk to your GP. Your GP can refer your child for further investigations, or treatment, if needed.
