Attention and Listening

 

Attention and listening refers to the ability to join in an activity for an amount of time, listen to the sounds or words during an activity and looking towards the activity. Attention and listening skills are the baseline for communication development.

If your child struggles with their Attention and Listening, this might look like…

 

  • Playing with toys for a short time

  • Flitting between activities

  • Fidgeting in their seat and/or difficulty staying seated

  • Preferring to be active

How can I help?

 

Top tips

  • Reduce distractions during play time e.g. turn off the TV, put mobile phones away
  • Keep activities short
  • Keep your language simple e.g. use 2-3 word phrases
