Expressive Communication

My child needs to say more words in a sentence

This might look like…

  • Their friends use more words

  • Sharing their ideas is difficult

  • Their stories or sentences are hard to follow

  • They get frustrated trying to tell you what they mean

How can I help?

Top tips

  • Talk about what you/they are doing e.g. ‘we are going to the park’, ‘let’s cook dinner’
  • If your child uses a short sentence, repeat it back and add words e.g. ‘Swimming today?’ ‘Yes, we are going swimming later’
  • Ask questions to encourage your child to say more about their message e.g. if your child says “painting at school”, you could ask “who did you paint with?”, “what did you paint?”
